At the breakfast to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the keynote speaker Dr. Crystal Kuykendall posed the question: how are the children in your community doing? Not very well I found out and I wanted to do something about it. I wanted to explain to children of all ages that they have a right to be here --- no less than the trees and the stars --- and I want to teach them how to be present for their lives, to fulfill their dreams and believe that we can achieve peace on earth in our lifetime.

Because community responsibility is a process that emerges and moves us from awareness to action, and I sincerely believe this is the time and this is the little book that could make a huge difference for all of us.

It's time we embrace our differences. The melting pot no longer exists, and we cannot expect everyone to look, act, and believe the same way. We are a fine stew and we need to retain all of our individual flavors and colors. For when combined, we enhance each other and our community.
